14th Oct. Quarters
11-4, 11-3, 11-9 (47m)
With an impressive 10-1 PSA head to head record against tonight’s opponent, two-time U.S. Open champion Gregory Gaultierwas the heavy favorite for the first quarterfinal.
For two and a half games it was all the Frenchman, with Simon Rösner simply not able to get into the match. Only from 7-3 down in the third was the big German able to make an impression on Gaultier’s game, levelling at 7-all.
Gaultier took three points in a row to earn match balls, and although Rosner, now looking very determined, managed to save two of them it was too late to stop Gaultier from reaching his fourth semifinal in a row.
“Beating Simon 3-0 is a good win,” said Gaultier. “He’s six in the world now and been close to beating me a few times.
“I felt I played really fluid in the first two games, and up to 7-3 in the third, then I lost my focus a little, maybe thinking I was already in the semis.”
