Gaultier triumphs Over Clyne to reach British Grand Prix Last Eight
World No.3 Gregory Gaultier produced an impressive display to defeat qualifier Alan Clyne in the first round of the AJ Bell British Grand Prix,M70 tournament.
Clyne started strongly and pressured the Frenchman in the early stages, gaining several game ball opportunities in the first. However, after some thrilling rallies in a physical encounter, Clyne failed to convert his chances which allowed Gaultier, who claimed the Stars on the Bund China Open last week, to clinch a closely fought opener 16-14.
The 'French General' further asserted his dominance in the second game, taking it 11-7 after a number of thunderous rallies enthralled the gathered spectators.
Although Clyne continued to battle hard, Gaultier was ultimately too strong for the Scottish No.1 and the 32-year-old sealed the victory with an 11-6 win in the third.
Gaultier will now face either Peter Barker or Cesar Salazar in the quarter-final stage as he looks to make it through to a fifth British Grand Prix semi-final.
“You’ve got to do the job and that’s all I care about,” said Gaultier.
“Sometimes you play really well, sometimes you're not at your best. At my age you go through the ranks, he [Clyne] played brilliantly, came through qualifying well and he played a really good game against me. It was tough, I had some game balls against me but I managed to sneak the game.
”It was a bit of a mental fight but I managed to get through the battle.”
